Step 1: Choose The Best Location and The Best Time To Elope in Yosemite National Park

Where are those breath taking places to elope in Yosemite National Park? And exactly how do we get there?

Yosemite National Park is this gigantic, beautiful place that feels straight out of a painting! There’s just so much to see and do here that it would take forever to cover it all. You’ll find granite cliffs, waterfalls, meadows, lakes, and everything in between in this breathtaking destination.

There’s a lot that goes into exploring Yosemite and everything it has to offer. That’s why we’ve put together an article for you to check out—it’s a little guide to help you feel more confident about planning your elopement and setting yourself up for success.

Glacier Point Elopement

With a full view of Half Dome in the background and an elevation so high it feels like your head is grazing the clouds, Glacier Point Amphitheater is an absolutely stunning spot for your Yosemite elopement. Whether you’re inviting guests or planning an intimate ceremony just for the two of you, this location is perfect. Plus, it’s super convenient—just a short walk from the parking lot! The amphitheater can accommodate up to 50 guests, but keep in mind that weddings with more than 35 guests require monitoring.

Another important thing to note is that Glacier Point is only open during certain times of the year. Due to its high elevation and snow in the winter, the road to Glacier Point is accessible only during the summer months (May–September). Be sure to check the National Park website for the most up-to-date information, as conditions and access can change from year to year.

Taft Point Elopement

This is my favorite spot in Yosemite National Park! It’s perfect for small elopements with fewer than 11 guests. If you’re looking to keep things intimate, this might just be the place for you. From here, you can take in breathtaking views of Yosemite Valley, El Capitan, and Yosemite Falls all at once!

If you’re thinking about tying the knot here, the best time of day is definitely sunset. With the valley stretching out in front of you and the golden rays streaming in as the sun sets, the scene is absolutely magical. It can get a little busy, so I recommend planning your elopement on a weekday.

Just like Glacier Point, this location is only open during certain months (May–September). The best times to visit are late May or late August through the end of September, right before it closes for the season.

Tunnel View Elopement

This is probably the most iconic spot in all of Yosemite! You’ll totally get what I mean the moment you enter the park. From here, you’ll have the perfect view straight through the valley, all the way to Half Dome.

Since this spot is so legendary, it can definitely get busy! If you’re considering an elopement here, I highly recommend choosing a weekday and going for a sunrise ceremony. It’s actually the perfect time because the sun rises behind Half Dome and casts its light straight down the valley—absolutely magical!

Yosemite Falls Elopement

It’s hard to truly grasp the power of Yosemite until you’ve seen Yosemite Falls! It’s easily one of the park’s most popular attractions, thanks to how accessible it is for everyone. With a paved walkway leading right up to the falls, this is an amazing spot for your elopement, especially if you’re inviting guests—it can accommodate up to 50 people!

If you’re considering this location, I highly recommend planning your elopement in the spring through early summer, from late March to early June. That’s when the falls are at their most powerful! But honestly, Yosemite Falls is stunning any time of year.

Yosemite is massive, and it’s impossible to list every single spot I’d recommend. These are just a few of the more popular ones. But here’s the thing—I’ve got a lot of secret spots that I’ve discovered over years of experience in Yosemite, and I keep those just for the couples I photograph.

As your photographer, my main goal is to ensure you have the absolute best experience possible. Yes, we’re going to create beautiful photos, but for me, it’s all about the experience. That’s why I keep the best locations private—they’re untouched secrets we can share, allowing us to craft the perfect elopement that’s uniquely yours.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO ELOPE IN YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK?

You really can’t go wrong getting married any time of year in Yosemite National Park. Every season has its own thing going for it, but that’s what makes it beautiful! It allows you to make the experience truly your own and choose what fits you best.

Spring
Planning a Yosemite elopement in the spring? This is one of our favorite seasons in the park! The weather is mild, and the waterfalls are at their peak—making it a stunning time to elope.

Summer
Summer brings the most visitors to the park but, it can get pretty hot. If you want to experience the best of Yosemite without the crowds, we recommend eloping during the shoulder months—late spring or early fall.

Fall
The fall season in Yosemite is absolutely incredible! Temperatures begin to drop, and the autumn colors bring so much life and magic to the park. If you’re planning a fall elopement, keep in mind that road closures start as early as October, which may affect location options.

Winter
For the most privacy during your Yosemite elopement, winter is the perfect season! Since the roads to Glacier Point and Taft Point are closed during these months, the valley becomes a peaceful, intimate setting for your elopement or small wedding.

WHAT IS “LEAVE NO TRACE” AND WHY SHOULD WE CARE ABOUT IT?

As adventure elopement photographers, we’re all about “Leave No Trace” (LNT). It’s simple: we go on amazing adventures to take beautiful photos, but we also make sure to leave everything as we found it. By doing our part to protect nature, we help ensure it stays beautiful for future generations to enjoy. Here are a few things we do—and ask our couples to do as well (but not limited to):

  • Stay on trails
  • Don’t climb over fences, ropes, or areas marked with “Do Not Trespass” signs (we’re all for adventure, but not for getting into trouble!)
  • No meadow stomping—let’s keep the plants and flowers happy!
  • No confetti in national parks—seriously, no matter how biodegradable it is. Every national park has its own ecosystem, and even biodegradable confetti can take a while to break down. Plus, animals might still nibble on it before it decomposes. If you’re set on confetti, we can save it for your cabin (as long as it’s allowed).

Step 3: Where to stay, How to get there and everything else you need to know to Elope In Yosemite National Park

There are plenty of places to stay in and around Yosemite, both inside and outside the park. Staying inside the park is the most convenient option since it lets you explore more of Yosemite and all it has to offer. However, staying outside the park opens up more choices and can help keep costs down!

Just a heads-up—if you’re staying outside the park, be sure to factor in travel time. Depending on the season, it can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours to get into the valley, so make sure you’re prepared for that drive.

Hotels / Lodges: some of these places also offer services for wedding and elopement venues within Yosemite National Park

  • The Ahwahnee: Open year-round. Centrally located in Yosemite Valley
  • Yosemite Valley Lodge: Open year-round. Located near the base of Yosemite Falls
  • Curry Village: Traditional cabins and canvas-sided tent cabins in the heart of Yosemite Valley
  • Autocamp Yosemite: Airstream, cabin, and luxury tent accommodations in Midpines, CA

Campgrounds: If you’re feeling adventurous and want to bring your camper van, RV, trailer, or tent for your elopement, check out these awesome spots:

Airbnbs Near Yosemite National Park:  The closest towns to the park are El Portal, Yosemite West, Wawona, and Mariposa. These places give you more flexibility, allowing you to pick a cabin that suits your style, guest capacity, and amenities. Plus, staying outside the park means fewer restrictions for your wedding day.

We’ve kept the list simple to avoid overwhelming you, but when it’s time to plan your adventure elopement or intimate wedding, we’ll narrow down the options that are the best fit for you.

Are Guests Invited? How Many People Can Be At Our Yosemite Elopement?

When it comes to planning your Yosemite elopement, it’s all about you two. Whether you’re looking for an intimate ceremony with just the two of you or a small celebration with friends and family, Yosemite National Park offers stunning locations to make your day unforgettable.

However, there are some rules you’ll need to know. For example, if you’re dreaming of getting married at Taft Point, the total guest limit is 11 people. This includes you, your partner, your vendors, and any guests you invite—so choose your group wisely!

If your guest list is more than 11, Yosemite requires you to reserve one of the designated elopement locations that can accommodate larger groups. These locations are listed on the website , and you’ll choose one when you apply. Popular options include Glacier Point Amphitheater, Cathedral Beach, and other equally breathtaking spots. Some of these locations can accommodate up to 50 people, making them perfect for slightly larger elopements.

No matter the size of your guest list, Yosemite’s beauty ensures that your elopement will be magical. From the awe-inspiring views at Glacier Point to the serene vibes of Cathedral Beach, your day will be one to remember.

Step 4: Marriage License and Legality in California

HOW TO APPLY FOR A MARRIAGE LICENSE IN CALIFORNIA

Let’s talk about one of the most important (but super doable) parts of planning your Yosemite elopement: getting your marriage license! Don’t worry—it’s not as complicated as it sounds. California keeps it pretty simple. There are two types of marriage licenses: public and confidential. For most couples, a public license is the way to go, so that’s what we’ll dive into.

If you’re planning to say “I do” in Yosemite, you’ll need to grab your marriage license from the Mariposa County Clerk’s office. Whether you’re a local Californian or flying in from across the country, you’re good to apply.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Call ahead to schedule an appointment. No walk-ins are allowed, and trust me, you don’t want to show up just to be turned away.
  2. Both of you need to be there in person with ID in hand—think driver’s license or passport.
  3. Bring $60 in cash for the fee (yes, cash only, so hit the ATM beforehand).

The best part? Once your application is approved, your marriage license is good to go immediately. There’s no waiting period, which means you can get married that same day if you want! Just don’t let it sit around too long—it’s only valid for 90 days. After that, you’ll need to reapply and pay the fee again.

I’ve helped so many couples through this process, so don’t stress. It’s just one step closer to the adventure of a lifetime!

HOW MANY WITNESSES DO WE NEED? OFFICIANT?

When it comes to the rules around witnesses for your ceremony, every state does things a little differently. Some require one or two witnesses, and others even let you self-solemnize (basically marrying yourselves—how cool is that?).

In California, though, here’s the scoop: you’ll need an officiant and at least one witness. If you’re bringing along family or friends, awesome—they can step in as your witness. But if it’s just the two of you, no worries! I’m more than happy to play witness and sign that paperwork for you. I’ve got a solid pen game. Plus, I can recommend a list of great officiants to make your ceremony feel just right.

The Quick Breakdown (AKA TL;DR Version):

  • Anyone can apply for a California marriage license—you don’t have to be a resident of California.
  • Both parties must be 18 or older to apply. (If you’re under 18, you’ll need a court order and written parental consent. I’d imagine that’s not your vibe, but hey, info is info!)
  • Applications must be submitted in person at the Mariposa County Clerk’s Office. Both of you need to be there to sign.
  • No waiting period! Your license is valid immediately upon approval.
  • Marriage licenses are good for 90 days—don’t let them expire, or you’ll have to reapply (and pay again).
  • Ceremonies must have at least one witness who’s over 18 years old.

Planning your Yosemite elopement is all about making it uniquely yours, and getting these small details squared away is just part of the adventure. Don’t worry—I’m here to help every step of the way!

Step 5: Apply For a Yosemite Elopement or Wedding Permit

Park Entrance Fee:
You’ve got options! Pay for a one-time visit pass at $35, or if you’ve got an America the Beautiful Pass ($80), you’re covered. This pass is a sweet deal if you’re planning other adventures at national parks, so it’s worth considering.

Wedding Permit Fee:
To have your ceremony inside Yosemite, you’ll need to fill out a wedding permit application form and pay a $150 non-refundable application fee online.

A Heads-Up About Fees:
Prices can change over time, so it’s always a good idea to double-check before you finalize your plans. I’ll help keep you in the loop so there are no surprises!
